Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir / Madam,

Firstly, I would like to thank you for offering me the opportunity to help the company in organising a wonderfull birthday party for our VIP guest. I would not be wrong by saying, It was an event of a lifetime for me.

The event was requested by the Governer of our city to celebrate his 50th birthday. We started by organizing the podium that was requested to be the centre point of performances that was organized by a dance group; and honoring the Governer and celebrating the cake cutting ceremony. Furthermore, We arranged the tables and chairs in a symmentrical order of ranks, higher post officials being on the frontline and the rest following to the back.

The event was filled with full of fun and joy with a special group of youths offering a unique gameplan, which was the most I liked in the event since everyone was invited to participate.

As far as the event was peaceful with joy, we faced a few challeges, serving alcohol to addictive guests who were on the verge of causing the dunken havoc, which I believe could have been taken care of by our security team.

Finally, we called off all the guests with a token of appreciation that was offered by our company. I would love to see and be part of such events more frequently and I thank you once again for offering me this opportunity and look forward to the next one.

Yours Sincerely,

John Mark.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the event (the Governor's 50th birthday), mentioned what you liked (the interactive youth performance), and suggested an area for improvement (security management regarding alcohol). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the content is slightly unfocused in the second paragraph, where you describe the podium and table arrangements in excessive detail, which is less relevant than the event's purpose. To improve, ensure that every sentence directly supports the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as in the second paragraph where the description of the podium and seating is somewhat disjointed. Additionally, the use of 'As far as the event was peaceful with joy' is not a standard cohesive transition. Improving the variety and accuracy of your linking words will help your ideas progress more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'opportunity', 'symmetrical', and 'appreciation'. However, there are several spelling errors ('wonderfull', 'Governer', 'symmentrical', 'challeges', 'dunken') and some awkward collocations, such as 'gameplan' to describe a performance or 'addictive guests' (which should be 'intoxicated' or 'unruly'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of word choice in formal contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you succeed in conveying your meaning, there are frequent grammatical errors, including punctuation issues (e.g., 'I would not be wrong by saying, It was...'), incorrect verb forms, and awkward phrasing ('the most I liked in the event'). The sentence structure in the second paragraph is particularly cluttered, making it difficult to follow. To reach a higher band, focus on reducing these minor errors and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with greater precision and fewer punctuation mistakes.
