Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir / Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to you about the event that our firm recently organized in your hotel.
The event was our annual function. In the event, there were several performances by our company staff show casting their talents in various activities, such as acting, singing, and dancing. The event was a success as everyone enjoyed it a lot.
I especially liked the big stage of your hotel and the screen behind it. There were a large number of visitors gathered that would have made it difficult to watch the performances for individuals sitting at the very back, but it didn't, due to big screen that made it easy for everyone to watch the acts.
However, the space of eating at the food section was very limited. People were having difficulties to stand there and eat their food, thus I believe that was the area for improvement for your hotel. Apart from this, everything was really good and much appreciated by the director of our company.
Thank you
Warm Regards,
George

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You provided clear details about the event, identified specific positive aspects of the hotel (the stage and screen), and offered a constructive suggestion regarding the food service area. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could have briefly explained how the food area could be improved, such as suggesting a better layout or more space for guests to move around. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Apart from this,' to transition between ideas. To improve, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that referencing is precise. For example, in the second paragraph, the phrase 'that would have made it difficult' is slightly clunky; using a more direct structure would improve the flow. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the distinct points of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'annual function,' 'performances,' and 'appreciated.' However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'space of eating at the food section' is unnatural; 'dining area' or 'catering space' would be more precise. Additionally, 'show casting' should be one word ('showcasing'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more sophisticated or precise collocations would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are some minor errors, such as 'People were having difficulties to stand' (should be 'difficulty standing') and 'due to big screen' (missing an article: 'due to the big screen'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading of articles and verb patterns. Increasing the variety of complex structures would further enhance your score.
