Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing this letter to express a pleasant and successful event of my company that took place at Rivera hotel. We organized this event on 23 of August and timing was 5 PM. Basically, our event was for the IELTS tutoring session for those students who wants to learn English language or for immigration purpose.

Firstly, our experience at your restaurant was fantastic because of good music system and well train staff. Moreover, seating arrangements and the speed of your wifi bring's my attention. I thought for my organization event this hall size and facilities would be insufficient, but it was bigger then my expectations.

However, I got a lot of bad reviews from my team members and from my boss about the insufficient space for parking of vehicles. People has to park there vehicles outside the venue, eventually some of them receive ticket for wrong parking.

Thanks for your precious time, I am looking forward for your response.

Your's faithfully,

Dirgh Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the event details are a bit vague, and the suggestion for improvement regarding parking is clear but could be more professionally articulated. The purpose of the event is slightly confusingly phrased as a 'tutoring session' for 'immigration purpose'. Overall, the response addresses the requirements of the task effectively, though it lacks the depth of detail that would elevate it to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'However' helps to guide the reader through the text. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is mostly accurate, although the connection between the event details and the subsequent feedback could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'insufficient' and 'expectations'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice or collocation, such as 'express a pleasant and successful event' (which is not idiomatic) and 'bring's my attention' (which should be 'drew my attention'). Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on fairly common expressions. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and idiomatic phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('People has to park', 'bring's my attention'), incorrect verb tense usage ('wants to learn'), and punctuation errors ('Your's faithfully'). Additionally, there are minor errors in article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. A more careful proofreading of basic grammatical rules would be beneficial.
