Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing regarding the recent event which our company organised in your hotel.

Our event was about the company's tenth anniversary one week ago. We invited around one hundred person, they were our company's co-workers, businessmen, businesswomen, and some special guests.

In addition, I would like to mention some things that I really enjoyed about your hotel. The staff were extremely nice, kind and helpful. They helped me during the organisation of the event and suggested me some great ideas to do. Also, I was greatful by the huge hall that you decorated for our guests. It was fascinating. Even though there was some noise during the event from outside. Due to the traffic and the cars' horns, it was somehow disturbing.

Moreover, I would appreciate it if you try to manage this issue by replace the area of the events to the terrace for example.

Yours faithfully,

Samah

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the event was an anniversary, adding a bit more detail about the nature of the event or the specific success of the evening would have strengthened the response. The suggestion for improvement is clear, though the phrasing regarding the 'terrace' could be more precise to ensure the manager understands your recommendation fully. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the positive feedback and finally the suggestions. Paragraphing is used to separate these distinct ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Also', and 'Moreover' to link your sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between the noise issue and the suggestion to move to the terrace could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by varying the sentence structure to avoid repetitive starts.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'fascinating', 'disturbing', and 'organisation' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'suggested me some great ideas' is non-standard; it should be 'suggested some great ideas to me'. Additionally, 'greatful by' is incorrect; the correct preposition is 'grateful for'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and prepositional usage to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'one hundred person' (should be 'people'), 'replace the area' (should be 'replacing the area'), and 'I was greatful by' (should be 'I was grateful for'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, pluralization, and the correct use of gerunds after prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would also help elevate your score in this criterion.
