Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to thank you for your excellent service during the corporate event our company organised at your hotel last week. The event was a two-day conference attended by approximately 80 employees and business partners. It included presentations, workshops, networking sessions and a formal dinner.

We were particularly impressed by the professionalism and helpfulness of your staff. The conference room was spacious, comfortable and well equipped with modern audio-visual facilities. In addition, the food was delicious, and the hotel’s convenient location made it easy for our guests to travel to the venue.

However, there are a few areas that could be improved. Some guests experienced delays when checking in, which caused inconvenience after a long journey. Furthermore, the Wi-Fi connection occasionally became slow during the busiest sessions.

Overall, we were very pleased with the event and would certainly consider using your hotel again. Thank you for making our conference a success.

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided clear details about the event (a two-day conference for 80 people), highlighted specific positive aspects (staff professionalism, facilities, and location), and offered constructive suggestions for improvement (check-in delays and Wi-Fi stability). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the task effectively, demonstrating a clear understanding of the expectations for a General Training Task 1 letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to link your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. The opening and closing salutations are correct for a formal letter, and the overall structure is professional and coherent. There is a natural flow throughout the text, and the paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different sections of your feedback.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases such as 'corporate event', 'professionalism and helpfulness', and 'caused inconvenience' demonstrate a good command of language suitable for a formal context. The word choices are accurate and natural throughout the letter. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common collocations could elevate the response further. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task and shows a good level of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your writing displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the relative clause in 'Some guests experienced delays when checking in, which caused inconvenience...'. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no noticeable errors in tense or subject-verb agreement. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the overall control of grammar is strong. The writing is clear, concise, and professional, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
