Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to provide some key points for conducting the event successfully. I participate in organizing the new year event. the event goes effectively on time and everyone enjoyed a lot with different dining area, music, peaceful ambience. It was held in peace arch hotel on 1st January at 12 am to 6 am with get together of all company members.

I specifically love the hotel entry which gives natural presence with water falling and little bridge. moreover, I admire the hotel's delicious food. Also, the separate living area for playing cards, enjoying beverages and alchoal. I stayed there for 2 days with comfortable rooms.

however, I would recommend some improvements. firstly, there is a need to improve the customer service as its my night event. so, I faced a problem with less catering staff members for serving. secondly, there should be separate area for dancing too for enjoying.

Thanks for everything that helped a lot in event.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion regarding catering staff is clear, but the description of the event details is slightly disjointed. To improve, ensure that the purpose of the letter is stated more clearly in the opening and that the transition between the event description and the feedback is smoother. The content is relevant, but more specific details regarding the 'event' would have strengthened the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'moreover', 'however', and 'firstly'. However, some of these transitions feel mechanical or are used incorrectly, such as starting a sentence with 'the event' without proper capitalization. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'it', 'there') is consistently accurate throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at using descriptive language, such as 'peaceful ambience' and 'natural presence'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and spelling errors, such as 'alchoal' (alcohol) and 'its my night event' (which is unclear). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring correct spelling of common terms related to hospitality and events.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses ('I participate in organizing' instead of 'I participated') and subject-verb agreement. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several sentences starting with lowercase letters. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency of the writing. Focusing on consistent tense usage and basic sentence punctuation would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
