Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my experience about your hotel.
To begin with, on 21st August, my company organised an event at your hotel, which is near Southdale, London. I really appreciate the facilities which were provided from your hotel.
Furthermore, my colleagues and I were very impressed by the hotel's food quality and its delecious taste. Moreover, we enjoyed the venue's sea view and the staff was quite helpful and knowledgeable.
Lastly, I just want to point out one issue which we faced with the air conditing. It was a yellow heat wave warning during the day of our event. Unfortunatelley, the AC was not working properly in the conferance room of your hetel and it was really defficult for all of us to concentrate for the meeting. In addition, the hotel's technitian was unable to provide assistance with this matter.
Therefore, I beleive the hotel should recheck the AC system, aslo should hire a professional electrician or an expert for this field.
Other than this we appreciate your service. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
VS.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the event date, the location, the positive feedback regarding food and staff, and the specific issue with the air conditioning. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the closing is polite and professional. The response is well-structured and fulfills all requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics, such as the event details, the positive feedback, and the complaint. Cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader through the text. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, they function well to maintain the flow of information. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the event context to specific praise and finally to the constructive criticism regarding the technical issue.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their points clearly. There are some spelling errors, such as 'delecious' (delicious), 'conditing' (conditioning), 'conferance' (conference), 'hetel' (hotel), 'defficult' (difficult), 'beleive' (believe), and 'aslo' (also). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede the overall meaning of the letter. To reach a higher band, the writer should focus on accuracy in spelling and attempt to use a slightly wider range of vocabulary beyond basic descriptive terms like 'helpful' or 'knowledgeable'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'provided from your hotel' (should be 'provided by'), 'It was a yellow heat wave warning' (should be 'There was'), and 'expert for this field' (should be 'expert in this field'). While these errors are present, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. The punctuation is generally correct, and the sentence structure is sufficient to convey the intended message. To improve, the writer should focus on preposition usage and ensuring subject-verb agreement in more complex sentences.
