Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to give you some feedback on the recent conference my company hosted in your hotel.

It was a 3-day conference, and we had so many of our staff members from different branches in the country around. Most of them lodged in your hotel, and those who could not get accommodation at your hotel used the nearby hotel.

To be honest, we were very much pleased with the services offered by your staff members. They were quite accommodating and friendly. However, what stood out for me was the meals served over the course of the event. your kitchen staff did an amazing job with the meals, so in that aspect I would say well done!

However, we had issues with the electricity. Most times during the presentations the light would go off, and this led to some distractions and delay in concluding each day's event. I understand electricity is a big issue in our country, but I believe that a reputable hotel like yours can afford to install backup batteries to keep the lights on before the generator comes on. Additionally, the cooling systems were not very effective, as people felt hot most of the time. I believe you have enough to cool the place; however, they might need servicing to be able to work at their optimal capacity.

Overall, despite the slight issues, we were generally pleased by your hospitality. I hope you take my suggestions into consideration.

Many thanks,

Queen Chi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You provided clear details about the event, identified specific positive aspects (staff and meals), and offered constructive suggestions regarding electricity and cooling systems. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, showing a good understanding of the task requirements. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the response maintains a consistent focus throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a polite conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Additionally', and 'Overall' to guide the reader through your points. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the problems mentioned and your suggestions is clear. The letter flows well, and the structure is appropriate for a formal business correspondence.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'accommodating and friendly', 'optimal capacity', and 'reputable hotel' are used effectively. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for the context, there is room for more sophisticated or varied collocations to reach the highest band. For instance, 'big issue' is a bit simplistic. Overall, the lexical range is adequate for the task, and there are no errors that impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are minor slips, such as the capitalization error in 'your kitchen staff' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'most times during the presentations'. However, these are non-systematic and do not affect the clarity of your message. You use a variety of structures, including conditional-like reasoning ('if... then' implied) and complex sentences with subordinate clauses, which demonstrates a good command of English grammar.
