Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir, I am writing this letter to discuss the company event that I organized recently in your hotel. Personally, I really appreciated your preparation and the arrangements that were made by your hotel staff for the success of the event. This great and authentic event was organized due to the 25th anniversary of our company. Also, this represents the achievements that our employees have made within the last 25 years. The most important gesture was made by your staff by helping with the decoration according to the theme, and the company's brand is really appreciated. One more thing that impressed me so much was the politeness and understanding of your workers at the hotel. However, I just want to make a little suggestion about the bar parties at your hotel. I think that you need to make a strict schedule for the parties in the pub because loud music late at night can ruin a proper sleep for guests and lead to other problems such as distraction. I hope that you will take the necessary steps to solve this issue. Yours sincerely, Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The purpose of the event (25th anniversary) and the specific feedback regarding staff politeness and the bar noise issue are clearly articulated. The response is well-focused and maintains a consistent, professional perspective throughout, meeting all requirements of the task prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the event description to positive feedback and finally to a constructive suggestion. Cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'The most important gesture', and 'However' are used to link ideas effectively. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the event details and the staff feedback could be slightly more refined to improve the overall cohesion of the middle section.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and conveys the intended meaning clearly. There are some good collocations such as 'necessary steps' and 'politeness and understanding'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and some phrasing is slightly repetitive or simplistic, such as 'great and authentic event' or 'one more thing'. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise and varied vocabulary to describe professional experiences and service quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a good command of sentence structure, using a mix of simple and complex sentences. Most sentences are error-free and easy to understand. There are minor issues, such as 'the company's brand is really appreciated' (which is slightly awkward in context) and 'ruin a proper sleep' (which should be 'disrupt the sleep'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the grammar does not impede communication, and the punctuation is generally correct throughout the letter.
