Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear sir/madam,

I am writing this letter regarding the business conference that was held on 20th August last month. Around 120 employees and guests attended the event, including presentations, workshops, and a formal dinner.

I was particularly impressed by the professionalism of your staff. The staff was very polite, well-organised and always ready to assist us. The conference room was spacious, clean, and equipped with high - quality audiovisual facilities, which helped the event run smoothly. The food served during the event was also delicious and received many compliments from our guests.

Although our experience was very positive, I would like to suggest a few improvements. The wi-fi connection became slow when many people were using it,and the parking area was slightly overcrowded during the morning. Expanding the parking area or prodiving better parking guidance would be helpful for future events.

Thank you once again for making our event successful. I look forward to using your hotel again in the future.

yours faithfully,

Jashanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the business conference, highlighted the professionalism of the staff and the quality of the facilities, and provided constructive suggestions regarding the Wi-Fi and parking. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a business event. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail about the 'workshops' or the 'formal dinner' to further extend the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single theme, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'Although,' 'which,' and 'also' effectively to link ideas. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that punctuation around your cohesive devices is consistent; for example, there is a missing space after the comma in 'workshops, and' and 'it,and'. Addressing these minor mechanical issues would make the flow even more professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context, such as 'professionalism,' 'audiovisual facilities,' and 'well-organised.' The word choices are generally accurate and convey your meaning clearly. There is a minor spelling error ('prodiving' instead of 'providing'), but this does not impede communication. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to describe the quality of service or the nature of the event, rather than relying on standard adjectives like 'delicious' or 'clean.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally sound. You correctly used the past tense to describe the event and the present tense for your suggestions. There are a few minor punctuation errors, such as the lack of spaces after commas and the inconsistent capitalization in the salutation ('Dear sir/madam' should be 'Dear Sir/Madam'). These are minor slips that do not affect the overall clarity of the message. Your control of grammar is strong throughout.
