You recently helped your company organise an event at a hotel. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:

– Mention what you particularly liked about the hotel
– Suggest areas for improvement.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to express my experience of the hotel during the event.

On 25th August 2026 at around 6pm, ABC Finance Ltd. Company organised an annual function and promotions event at your hotel. Around thousand people were attended the event including me.

The hotel ambiance was attractive and a decent environment. The carpet color and curtains both were matched. The guest chairs gives the relaxation feel with neck support. Coming to dinner, the biryani and kebab were very delicious, including deserts.

I would like to suggest that, some improvements in your hotel are needed as soon as possible. The switches were too dirty and there was dirt on the AC outlets, which is clearly visible to guests. Regular washing of chair covers will give more attraction and feel new to guests.

At last, I would recommend my colleagues and relatives to book future events at your hotel.

Regards,

Khan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the event, you could have provided more specific context about the nature of the 'promotions event' to make the letter more engaging. The suggestions for improvement are clear, but they could be expanded with a brief explanation of how these changes would enhance the overall guest experience. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but more detail would elevate the response to a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, with clear paragraphing that separates the introduction, the positive feedback, the suggestions, and the conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Coming to dinner' and 'At last' to transition between ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'In addition to this', 'Consequently') to create a smoother progression of ideas. Referencing is generally clear, and the reader can easily follow your points throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'ambiance', 'promotions', and 'recommend'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'thousand people were attended' (should be 'attended') and 'give more attraction' (should be 'make it more attractive'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'The guest chairs gives' (subject-verb agreement), 'carpet color and curtains both were matched' (passive voice error), and 'some improvements... are needed' (slightly awkward phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring correct tense usage will help you achieve greater accuracy in your writing.
