Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing this email to address that I have recently helped your company organize an event at a hotel.

Furthermore, the event was arranged on 26th August. It was at 3 in the afternoon, on the third floor of the building.

Moreover, I appreciate several key aspects of the event, particularly the guest speakers. Additionally, washroom facility was well maintained. Overall, I found many things quite a positive and music was a delight.

However, some things like chairs, door locks, and table was broken at some places which can be repaired in order to maintain the appealing from the guests more.

Lastly, I would like to recommend your place further to my clients in order to have a good dinner party or festival celebrations. Many people have given a positive feedback to the servings and food quality, thank you for such a delightful dinner.

Kind regards,

Ted

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these points is somewhat superficial. For instance, while you mention the event date and time, the description of the event itself is vague—it is unclear what kind of event it was. The suggestions for improvement are listed but lack detail regarding how these issues impacted the event. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are more fully extended and supported with specific context, which would provide a more professional tone suitable for a formal letter to a manager.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Lastly' to link your points. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their placement at the start of sentences. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'maintain the appealing from the guests', where the grammatical structure disrupts the flow of the argument. Improving the naturalness of these transitions would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some appropriate terms like 'delightful', 'maintained', and 'celebrations'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'maintain the appealing' (should be 'appeal') and 'servings' (which is less natural than 'service' or 'catering'). You rely on fairly common vocabulary; to achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise, topic-specific collocations related to event management and hospitality, such as 'amenities', 'infrastructure', or 'impeccable service'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'table was broken' should be 'tables were broken' (subject-verb agreement), and 'address that I have recently helped' is an awkward construction. There are also minor errors in article usage and word forms, such as 'the appealing'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent pluralization will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
