Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I recently booked a conference room as well as few rooms in your hotel. I particularly liked the food and the services provide by your staff and suggests some points for improvement.
There was a business development meeting to discuss about future investment projects we want to initiate in upcoming years and your hotel was most convenient as it is just few minutes drive from the airport.
I really want to appreciated the food which was really delicious and almost all of the members loved it. In addition to this, hotels staff are really helpful and available indeed. For example, One of the employee forgot the key card into the room and it was solved promptly by just calling one of your staff.
However, I would like to give my honest feedback regarding the meeting room. Since it was located in semi-basement and has no windows causing restriction for natural sun-sunlight which makes the presentation looks dull and also the chairs were uncomfortable to sit.
Hope you will consider my suggestions for future reference.
Yours faithfully,
Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The purpose of the letter is clear from the start. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the event is brief, and the suggestions for improvement could be more detailed to show a higher level of engagement with the task. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though some phrasing is slightly informal or awkward. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'However', and 'For example' are used to link sentences and ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is mostly clear, although the sentence structure in the second paragraph is a bit cluttered, which slightly affects the smoothness of the reading. Overall, the structure is coherent and supports the message well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, allowing the writer to express their points clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'convenient' and 'promptly'. However, there are several instances of word choice errors or awkward collocations, such as 'services provide by your staff' (should be 'provided') and 'sun-sunlight' (a repetition error). The phrase 'semi-basement' is understandable but slightly unnatural in this context. While the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('hotels staff are') and tense inconsistencies ('I really want to appreciated'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors, such as the missing article before 'semi-basement'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The writer demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the control over these structures is not yet consistent enough for a band 7.
