Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to provide the feedback regarding an event organised by Protocase at your hotel. On August 28th, we had booked your conference room where we conducted our company's annual meeting including 80 people.

Firstly, I would like to thank you for the exceptional service prodvided by your team. Despite having limited time for lunch, all the guests were quite satisfied with the food and service. Specifically, we were impressed with the way of providing food labels clearly to avoid cross-contamination. Due to this, the people with dietary restrictions enjoyed their meal without any hestitation which added to their satisfaction.

However, I would like to suggest that seating arrangement could have been better. If there was more space between the chairs, it would have been considerably comfortable for everybody to move around. I understand that it was difficult due to limited space, removing the unnecessary furniture could have made the room more spacious.

I hope that you will take this feedback positively and make our next event more successful.

Yours faithfully,

Jashanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You provided clear details about the event, including the date and the number of attendees. You highlighted the food service and labeling as a positive aspect, and provided a constructive suggestion regarding the seating arrangement. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively. The structure is logical, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the opening paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. You used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Specifically', 'However', and 'Due to this' to link your sentences and paragraphs. The transition between the positive feedback and the constructive criticism is smooth. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The letter flows well from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context, such as 'exceptional service', 'cross-contamination', and 'dietary restrictions'. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'prodvided' and 'hestitation', which are likely slips rather than a lack of knowledge. The word choice is generally precise and fits the context well. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions, but the current range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and the punctuation is generally correct. There are minor issues, such as 'the way of providing food labels' which is slightly unnatural (better: 'the way your team provided clear food labels'). The sentence 'If there was more space... it would have been considerably comfortable' contains a slight error in adjective usage (better: 'it would have been more comfortable'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication at all.
