Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to organize an event for our company at your hotel.

Firstly, I like to explain the situation in detail that we want to organize the annual award event in your hotel. There will be around 50 persons will attend the event. I want the booking on Friday at 8:00 pm.

I would like to mention that I quite really like the ambiance of your hotel, cooperated staff, services, and the entire menu, especially the beef steak. It will definitely add in the menu. That is why I recommend this place for my company's Annual event.

Finally, I would appreciate if you could book the hotel of this event on required date. I would also appreciate if you could clean the terrace area properly, because I want this area for the event

I look forward for your response.

Yours faithfully,

Kinza Latif

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening sentence is confusing as it suggests you are writing to 'organize' an event that has already occurred or is being booked. The ideas are relevant but could be developed with more specific detail to better meet the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition between the positive feedback and the request for cleaning is abrupt. While the overall progression is clear, the lack of varied linking words and the somewhat repetitive sentence structures make the flow feel a bit disjointed. Improving the use of transition signals would help the ideas connect more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'I quite really like' are redundant and informal. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'book the hotel of this event' instead of 'book the venue for this event'. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there is little attempt to use less common or more sophisticated lexical items that would elevate the tone of a formal business letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are several grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of the writing. For instance, 'There will be around 50 persons will attend' is a double verb construction, and 'I like to explain' should be 'I would like to explain'. The sentence 'It will definitely add in the menu' is also grammatically incorrect. While the meaning is usually understandable, the range of structures is limited to simple sentences, and the frequent errors in verb tense and sentence construction prevent a higher score.
