Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to share my feedback about the recent seminar of our company at your hotel.

This year my employer hosted this annual seminar of our company at your hotel on my recommendation. This event was held on 7th June in the evening and dinner was included. The members of this event was not our international clients but also all of our staff was taking part in this meeting.

I really liked the venue as your party hall is really huge which was perfect of hosting the seminar for large number of guests. Moreover, my co-workers were impressed with the presentation and taste of the food. There were clear labels on the food items which separates the non-vegetarian food from the vegetarian food. Also, I would like to appreciate the service provided by your staff as all of them were very kind and polite to us. All these things left an positive impact on my mind for your hotel.

Although I was impressed with the service, still I believe that there are some areas which need improvement for our future even that we are thinking to organise at your place. Firstly, the wi-fi speed was not constant due to which we were having problems in showing the presentation to the clients. Plus, some of washrooms were not cleaned properly as per our staff experience. I hope that next time you'll fix this small issues.

Thank you for your service

Yours Sincerely,

Gnit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully covers all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, the development of ideas could be more sophisticated; for instance, the description of the event could be slightly more concise to allow for a more detailed explanation of the impact of the suggested improvements. However, the response is fully functional and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different requirements of the task. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Although', and 'Firstly' are used to guide the reader through the text. While the flow is generally good, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother in the second paragraph. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some good collocations like 'positive impact' and 'annual seminar'. However, there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'perfect of hosting' (should be 'perfect for hosting') and 'this small issues' (should be 'these small issues'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding the use of more sophisticated synonyms would enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The members of this event was not our international clients but also all of our staff was taking part' (subject-verb agreement and correlative conjunction error) and 'future even' (should be 'future event'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are minor slips. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and pluralisation would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
