Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
Our company hosted an event at the The Park Inn hotel last weekend under your management. The event being a celebration party for our company acquiring a national award for the immaculate job done in the infrastructure planning of the cities scattered all throughout the country. All the employees attended the event and were accordingly awarded for their exceptional service.
I appreciate the whole the ambience of the hotel as well as the staff going the extra mile to provide congenial service. The decoration provided inculcated a sense of being successful as a team as the company's employee group pictures were implied everywhere in the hall.
Despite being hosted the event this good, I have a little suggestion to be made that would have definitely increased the overall enjoyment. The food served really need your sincere attention. A few feedbacks from my colleagues depict the pasta served being stale. The drinks served were not chilled enough to be considered perfect.
Yours Sincerely,
Mohdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You provided clear details about the event, identified specific aspects of the hotel you enjoyed, and offered constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for instance, while you mentioned the 'immaculate job' of the company, a bit more detail on the specific nature of the event would have added depth. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use basic cohesive devices to link your ideas, such as 'Despite being hosted' and 'as well as'. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'The event being a celebration party', which lacks a main verb. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that your sentences transition more smoothly into one another. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary, including some ambitious choices like 'congenial', 'inculcated', and 'immaculate'. However, there are some issues with collocation and word choice. For example, 'The event being a celebration party' is grammatically incomplete, and 'A few feedbacks' is incorrect as 'feedback' is an uncountable noun. Additionally, 'implied everywhere' is not the correct usage in this context; 'displayed' would be more natural. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, more precise word choices and attention to collocations would elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'Despite being hosted the event this good' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'Despite the event being well-hosted'. You also have issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'The food served really need your sincere attention' (needs). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for verb forms will help improve your accuracy.
