Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam

I am assisting my company on organising a function at your hotel. I am writing this letter to set up everything related to an event in a proper manner.

The event that we are going to organise at your hotel is for the promothion of our companys' new product. A firm has decided to advertise our product in a market and before that we arranged an event with our special guests and every person who is working with our company so that we can get most of the feedback first.

The main reason why i have booked your venue for such a special event is that this is well known place for celebrating events not only due to its' interior but also for such a spacious hall that 500 people can easily stay there. Additionally, I have seen many positive reviews from internet about your service.

The only thing I want to be improved while the event will be started is that your AC ventilation is not working properly. As it is too hot outside, so you need to AC repaired.

Please contact me on my email if you need further information.

Your faithfully,

Navjot Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting an area for improvement. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of the event's purpose is slightly repetitive and could be more concise. To reach a higher band, ensure that the details provided are more directly relevant to the 'event' context, such as specifying the date or the nature of the product, rather than focusing on general market advertising. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the depth of information could be improved.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, with clear paragraphing for each requirement. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Additionally' and 'The main reason why', to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. Some transitions feel slightly abrupt, and the referencing is sometimes imprecise, such as the phrase 'while the event will be started', which is awkward. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph flows naturally into the next would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'spacious hall' and 'positive reviews'. However, there are several instances of inaccurate word choice and minor spelling errors, such as 'promothion' (promotion), 'companys'' (company's), and 'its'' (its). Additionally, the phrase 'set up everything related to an event in a proper manner' is somewhat wordy and lacks precision. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and double-check your spelling of common business-related terms to ensure your writing appears more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'I am assisting my company on organising' (should be 'in organizing'), 'every person who is working' (could be simplified to 'all staff'), and 'you need to AC repaired' (should be 'you need to have the AC repaired'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with apostrophes. While these errors do not prevent the message from being understood, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of verb patterns and passive voice constructions.
