Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir,

Last week A marriage event, were organized by our company in a hotel and it was one of the best event i have ever saw from the catering to the dance and lastly, the performance by groom and his wife was really beautiful apart from this the decoration as well as all the employees who has served were friendly and respectful towards the guests.

Furthermore, I noticed the company also organised some games for guests and also for children so they do not interrupt the event.

Secondly, the professionalism of the manager and directing team have act in such that they take care of everything.

However, you should hire some more cooks in the cooking team due to the reason of shortage of staff. Although everything was perfect but in kitchen area was in a rush because of that some of the waiters had to help in cooking, which i think was inappropriate.

your faithfully,

Sarbjit Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the description of the event is quite vague, and the suggestion for improvement regarding the kitchen staff could be more clearly linked to the overall guest experience. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully extended with more specific details rather than just mentioning them briefly. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the structure could be more refined.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Secondly', and 'However' to transition between ideas. However, the flow within paragraphs is occasionally disjointed, particularly in the first paragraph where multiple ideas are linked with 'and' repeatedly. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between the manager's professionalism and the games is not explicitly stated. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph focuses on a single clear theme would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, using terms like 'catering', 'professionalism', and 'inappropriate'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'A marriage event, were organized' (should be 'A wedding was organized') and 'the performance by groom and his wife' (should be 'the bride and groom'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually accurate for a formal business letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('A marriage event, were organized', 'the manager and directing team have act'), incorrect verb tenses, and missing articles. While you attempt some complex sentence structures, they are often marred by these errors. The punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your sentence structures are grammatically sound before attempting more complex forms.
