Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing about an event that I organized for my company in your hotel last month.
The event was about the business proposal as our company named Retail Big have been planning for expansion programs overseas. Therefore, many spectators arrived to attend this business meeting to see the proposal.
Mentioning your hotel's services: the conference room was quite spacious and equipped with modern facilities. Staff was also welcoming and they treated every guest professionally and provided the guidance when required without any delay. Their dedication towards assigned duties should be rewarded.
Despite these arrangements, the areas which seek attention and can be improved are food services and sitting arrangement. Although the menu showed variety of delicious eateries, many of the dishes were not served which was quite disappointing. Additionally, sitting area was congested which made the people hard to move.
I hope you will consider my feedback.
Regards,
Amanjot.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the event (e.g., the date or the number of attendees) and offer more constructive, detailed suggestions for improvement rather than just stating the problems. Overall, the task is fully addressed in a clear and professional manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Despite these arrangements', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the event description and the hotel services could be more fluid. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'expansion programs', 'professionally', and 'congested'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'spectators' (which usually refers to sports events; 'attendees' or 'delegates' would be better for a business meeting) and 'eateries' (which refers to the place, not the food itself; 'dishes' or 'menu items' is more accurate). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'as our company named Retail Big have been planning' (should be 'has been planning') and 'provided the guidance' (should be 'provided guidance'). Additionally, 'sitting arrangement' should be pluralized or phrased as 'seating arrangements'. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the communication remains effective. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. The range of structures is sufficient for the task, but more consistent accuracy is needed for a higher band.
