Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir / Madam,

I am writing the letter to inform about the feedback for the event my company organized at the hotel premises on the evening of last Saturday.

This event was mainly about the press conference held for media and news representatives arriving from different parts of the country. It was a gathering of approximately 250 people, and event lasted for 4 hours starting at 7 pm in the evening.

Main perks that hotel provided us for the event was the parking spaces available and walking distance from the parking lot to the main hall was under a minute. Moreover, the restrooms were available in each corner of the hall making guests convenient to occupy.

One area that can be improved with some efforts is the cafeteria. It is very small in size for such a huge gatherings as everybody is looking forward for some refreshment drinks either tea or coffee.

I would be very grateful if you consider my suggestions and look forward to host more events in future at your hotel.

Kind regards,

Navraj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'details' of the event by mentioning the specific nature of the press conference or the company's name to add more depth, and ensure the suggestions for improvement are linked to a specific recommendation for the manager to consider.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single topic, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'One area that can be improved', which effectively link your ideas. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between the positive feedback and the suggestions is smoother, perhaps by using a contrastive connector to signal the shift in tone.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'premises', 'representatives', and 'refreshment'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'making guests convenient to occupy' (which is awkward) and 'look forward to host' (should be 'look forward to hosting'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated synonyms would elevate your score. Focus on using words that sound natural in a professional business context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I am writing the letter to inform about the feedback' (should be 'to provide feedback'), 'event lasted' (needs an article: 'the event lasted'), and 'huge gatherings' (should be singular 'a huge gathering'). Additionally, 'Dear sir / Madam' should be capitalized as 'Dear Sir/Madam'. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on article usage and verb patterns to improve accuracy.
