Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my appreciation in regards to excellent service we received during the corporate event held at your hotel,
The event was our company’s first annual dinner, which was held in the hotel’s main banquet hall. Around 80 employees were attending the gathering for dinner, followed by presentations and a small award ceremony.
The dinner was the one highlight of the night, as it was delicious, beautifully presented and the variety of dishes that were available as per different preferences. Furthermore, the staff was welcoming and helpful. We received a excellent customer service and hospitality.
Despite the food and service one concern I would like to bring to your attention is that the air conditioning in the main hall was very poor. Everybody was complaining about the high temperature. Although the team was eager to help, they were not able to solve this issue being a mechanical problem. I hope this matter gets your attention and be resolved as soon as possible.
Based on overall experience, I would be pleased to recommend your hotel to others and would be glad to consider your venue for future corporate events.
Yours faithfully,
Priyanka Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided clear details about the corporate event, identified specific positive aspects of the hotel (food and staff), and offered a constructive suggestion regarding the air conditioning. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, demonstrating a good understanding of the formal letter format.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Despite', and 'Although' to link your sentences effectively. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The transition between the positive feedback and the constructive criticism is handled smoothly, maintaining a professional and polite tone throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal business context, such as 'appreciation', 'corporate event', 'hospitality', and 'venue'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate, there are minor slips, such as 'a excellent' (should be 'an excellent') and 'the one highlight' (which sounds slightly unnatural; 'a highlight' would be better). However, these errors do not impede communication. You successfully use topic-specific language related to event management, which adds to the professional quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'in regards to excellent service' (missing 'the') and 'be resolved' (should be 'should be resolved'). Additionally, the sentence 'the variety of dishes that were available as per different preferences' is a fragment and lacks a main verb. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation and sentence structure is generally strong enough to convey your meaning clearly.
