Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to share feedback on the recent event I organized in your hotel for our company last week.

This event was majorly a recognition event for company staff and every individual attending it appreciated the service provided. Additionally, the hotel staff was very friendly which got recognized by my general manager. I would like to appreciate the cleanliness and the decor. The company team is really thankful for such a nice hosting and management that made me proud of choosing this hotel. I regret to say that I was not completely satisfied with food and I would like to suggest for some variations for guests such as more veg and gluten free options.

I look forward to some changes in the menu. On behalf of management and staff, thanks for all the hosting. We look forward to book more events in future.

Yours faithfully,

Harmanpreet K

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the event details are provided, the positive aspects (staff, cleanliness, decor) are highlighted, and the areas for improvement (food variety) are clearly stated. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention the event was for 'company staff,' providing a bit more context about the nature of the event or the number of attendees would have added depth. The letter meets the requirements of the task effectively, maintaining a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'On behalf of,' which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the praise and the criticism is a bit abrupt. Using a more sophisticated linking phrase to introduce the suggestion for improvement would enhance the overall cohesion. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, though the structure could be slightly more refined to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'recognition,' 'cleanliness,' and 'variations' correctly. The tone is consistently formal and polite. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive in places, such as the repeated use of 'event' and 'hosting.' To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or synonyms to describe the service and the experience. For example, instead of 'nice hosting,' you could use 'impeccable service' or 'professional hospitality.' The current range is sufficient to convey your message clearly without any significant errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically correct and easy to understand. There are a few minor issues, such as the phrasing 'majorly a recognition event,' which is slightly informal and awkward. Additionally, there is a missing space after the period in 'decor. The' and a minor error in 'look forward to book,' which should be 'look forward to booking.' Despite these small slips, your control over grammar is generally good, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would help elevate your score.
