Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter to talk about an anniversary event that our company organised in your hotel recently. I also took a part in organising the event and it went well.

Everyone was happy and enjoyed the event. I particularly liked about the hotel is a big bannquet hall with amazing decorations, really everyone appreciated the theme.

But, I would like to share one of our inconvenience that has faced at the hotel. Our guests faced an difficulty while getting access to the lift as everyone needs access code to use the lift. In my opinion, it is not appropriate while events as we cannot handle everyone when the event is going on to provide access code. For instance, we invited many guests and we don't know who will be attending.. Moreover, Hotel didn't inform us before about this.

I hope bringing this into your view will helps improve this problem, which can benefit to future clients.

Thank You,

sushi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the event details, the positive aspects of the hotel, and the areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation regarding the lift access code is a bit repetitive and could have been more clearly articulated to explain the impact on the guests. While the purpose of the letter is clear, the response would benefit from more detailed descriptions of the event and more professional phrasing when suggesting improvements to ensure the tone remains constructive throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. There is a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences, such as 'But' and 'Moreover', are functional but basic. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed. To improve, you should aim to use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create a smoother flow between your ideas and to better connect the problem described with the suggested solution.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific vocabulary such as 'anniversary event', 'banquet hall', and 'decorations'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'talk about an anniversary event' (should be 'write regarding'), 'took a part' (should be 'took part'), and 'share one of our inconvenience' (should be 'share an inconvenience'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the range and precision of your language. Expanding your vocabulary to include more formal business terminology would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I particularly liked about the hotel is a big bannquet hall' (missing 'that'), 'an difficulty' (incorrect article), 'everyone needs access code' (missing article), and 'it is not appropriate while events' (should be 'during events'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and tense issues. While these errors rarely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage will help improve your accuracy.
