Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Hotel Manager,

Today, I am writing this letter to inform you that our company has decided to arrange an event at your hotel.

There is a grand welcome party that our owner of the company has decided to give to all employees, which are new and old ones. Moreover, our owner has given this responsibility to me and told me that you should book the hotel in advance.

However, last year I visited this particular hotel with my family members to celebrate my birthday, so I know very well the facilities of the hotel. The name of the hotel is sunridge that is located near the downtown area with all kinds of amenities.

After visiting there, I have decided to book this hotel for our company event.

Some things need to improve like, fast service of waiters, which seemed slow while staying there. I observed.

I hope you will emphasize these areas so people do not face any kind of obstacles.

Your faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the description of the event is a bit repetitive regarding the 'owner', and the suggestion for improvement is quite brief. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about the event (such as the date or number of guests) and elaborate more on the nature of the service issues you encountered. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the structure could be more professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as the transition 'However, last year I visited...'. The logical flow between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit disjointed. For instance, the transition from describing the event to your past visit feels abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'amenities', 'obstacles', and 'in advance'. However, there are some unnatural collocations and word choices, such as 'grand welcome party that our owner of the company has decided to give' and 'fast service of waiters'. To improve, focus on using more natural phrasing and precise vocabulary. Avoid repetitive structures and try to incorporate a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary related to hospitality and event management.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'which are new and old ones' (should be 'both new and old employees') and 'I observed' as a fragmented sentence. Additionally, there are punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'Your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). The errors in sentence construction and grammar occur frequently enough to be noticeable, though they do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence completion will help.
