Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing to express my gratitude for the quality service you have provided when my company held a corporate event in your hotel recently. As I was responsible organizing this event, I was impressed by the professionalism of your staff and excellent hotel facilities. The event was a two-day business conference attended by 120 employees & business partners. It was an event which consisted of official meetings, a series of corporate presentations, in person discussions with CEO followed by a formal dinner on the final evening. The arrangements by your team went remarkably smoothly, largely because your staff were extremely professional and well organized to our responses. The thing that highly impressed me was the conference room facilities of your hotel's auditorium. The conference room was spacious, comfortable seating arrangements equipped with a high-quality audiovisual sound system. In addition, the catering system was of exceptionally high standard. The event staff was courteous throughout the event, which created a welcoming atmosphere. However, there were some areas that could be improved. The registration area near the conference room is congested and the Wi-fi connection was occasionally unstable in the afternoon sessions. Providing additional reception staff & upgrading internet service will make the future events even more successful. Thank you once again. Overall, I enjoyed the quality service that you have provided which made our event successful. In future, I will recommend your hotel to other companies & business partners to hold another event programme with you.
Kind regards,
Sourav Barua

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task instructions. You clearly provided details about the event, mentioning it was a two-day business conference for 120 employees that included official meetings and a formal dinner. Furthermore, you highlighted what you particularly liked about the hotel, specifically praising the conference room facilities, the audiovisual sound system, and the courteous event staff. Finally, you successfully suggested areas for improvement, noting the congested registration area and the unstable Wi-fi connection, and recommended practical solutions such as upgrading internet services. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. Your ideas are well developed and cover all aspects of the prompt comprehensively, earning a strong score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear overall progression of ideas, moving logically from the purpose of the letter and event details, to positive aspects, and finally to areas for improvement and closing remarks. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas together. Cohesive devices are generally managed well, with phrases like 'In addition,' and 'However,' helping to guide the reader through the text. However, paragraph breaks are underutilised, as the body of the letter is somewhat clumped into a large block of text rather than being separated into distinct paragraphs for details, likes, and suggestions. While referencing is mostly clear, better paragraphing would elevate the overall organisational flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for a business context, successfully employing terms such as 'professionalism', 'corporate presentations', 'audiovisual sound system', and 'welcoming atmosphere'. There are occasional slight awkwardnesses in collocation, such as 'well organized to our responses', which feels slightly unnatural. Additionally, some common phrases could be enhanced for greater precision. Despite these minor lapses, the lexical resource is sufficient to convey your message clearly and naturally, demonstrating an ability to use less common vocabulary items with general success.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'The event was a two-day business conference attended by 120 employees & business partners.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward constructions throughout the text. For instance, the opening sentence has a tense issue ('service you have provided when my company held...'), and there is a preposition omission in 'As I was responsible organizing this event' (should be 'responsible for organizing'). Another minor slip is found in 'The conference room was spacious, comfortable seating arrangements equipped with...', which lacks a verb for the second clause. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the score from reaching higher bands where error-free sentences predominate.
