Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter as a mark of appreciation to your hotel management. Last weekend I was able to organize a event at your hotel, it went very well. I have received many positive feedbacks from my colleagues after the event.
The Program was about awareness about prevention of carbon emission from vehicles by using our company newly designed electronic vehicles. As our Automobile company is making E-Bikes with emits zero carbon in atmosphere. The event is organized for 300 people, but we end up with almost 400 people as it was an open event.
I want to give kudos to your Hotel management, because they did not panic by seeing this huge gathering. They were able to do seating arrangements of all people with refreshment. I also want to mention ambience of your place was over the moon and all the facilities like air conditioners, bathrooms were all nice and clean.
Lastly I think you can make necessary arrangements to increase size of the parking. As I was able to see people parking on streets due to unavailability of parking space.
Thank you
Regards
Hailay

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student covers all bullet points required by the prompt successfully. They provide clear details about the event, such as the unexpected attendance of 400 people for the carbon emission awareness program. They mention what was particularly liked about the hotel, including the staff handling the large gathering calmly, the pleasant ambience, and the cleanliness of facilities. They also suggest an area for improvement by recommending an expansion of the parking lot due to street parking overflow. The tone is polite and appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. Ideas are sufficiently developed and all parts of the task are well addressed, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph addressing a specific aspect of the prompt. The opening states the purpose, the body paragraphs cover the event details, hotel highlights, and suggestions for improvement respectively. Cohesive devices are used adequately, though some transitions could be smoother. For example, expressions like 'The Program was about' and 'Lastly I think' function as signposts, but the flow between sentences could be tighter. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, ensuring the progression of ideas remains easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'mark of appreciation', 'huge gathering', and idioms like 'over the moon'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'organize a event' instead of 'an event', 'emits zero carbon in atmosphere' instead of 'into the atmosphere', and 'do seating arrangements' instead of 'make seating arrangements'. These minor lexical slips do not impede overall communication, but they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('as it was an open event') and conditional-like constructions. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses. For instance, there is an article error ('a event' instead of 'an event'), a comma splice in the first paragraph ('...your hotel, it went very well'), a preposition issue ('in atmosphere'), and a tense inconsistency ('The event is organized' instead of 'was organized'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, allowing the writer to secure a band 6.0 for grammar.
