Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to thank you for helping us to organize an our company event at your prestigious hotel last weekend. The event was a corporate meeting followed by a dinner for approximately 100 employees, and overall, it was a great success.
Overall, we were very pleased with the arrangements. I particularly liked the spacious and well-equipped conference room, which provided a comfortable environment for both presentations and discussions. In addition, your staff were extremely friendly, professional, and helpful throughout the event. The quality of the food was also impressive, and our guests thoroughly enjoyed the dinner.
However, I would like to suggest a few areas for improvement. The parking area was rather crowded, and several guests had difficulty finding a space. Moreover, clearer signs to the conference room would make it easier for visitors to find their way around the hotel.
Thank you once again for your wonderful hospitality.
Yours faithfully,
Jasmeen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all bullet points of the task in a natural and appropriate tone. Jasmeen successfully provides details about the event, mentioning that it was a corporate meeting and dinner for approximately 100 employees. She clearly mentions what she particularly liked about the hotel, highlighting the spacious, well-equipped conference room, the friendly and professional staff, and the impressive food quality. Furthermore, she effectively suggests areas for improvement by addressing the crowded parking area and the need for clearer signs to the conference room. The purpose of the letter is consistently clear, and the register is appropriate for corresponding with a hotel manager.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized and easy to follow. Ideas are well-sequenced, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter and event details in the first paragraph, to positive aspects in the second paragraph, and finally to areas for improvement in the third paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes. Cohesive devices are managed well without being intrusive, using linking expressions such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader naturally through the text. Referencing throughout the letter is clear and unambiguous, maintaining a strong overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary used is natural and appropriate for a formal business correspondence. Jasmeen demonstrates a good range of vocabulary with items such as 'prestigious hotel', 'corporate meeting', 'well-equipped conference room', and 'wonderful hospitality'. Collocations are generally handled accurately, and there are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While the range is sufficient and precise enough to meet the demands of the task well, it relies mostly on common functional business terms rather than highly sophisticated uncommon lexical items, which places it comfortably within the Band 7 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Jasmeen demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures, successfully utilizing a mix of simple and complex sentences. Examples of complex structures include relative clauses, such as 'which provided a comfortable environment for both presentations and discussions' and 'that would make it easier for visitors to find their way around the hotel.' The majority of sentences are error-free. There is only one minor grammatical slip in the opening sentence ('organize an our company event'), where the article 'an' is incorrectly included before the possessive determiner 'our'. Apart from this isolated slip, punctuation and grammar are accurate throughout.
