Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my appreciation for the excellent service provided by your hotel during our recent company event. I was responsible for organizing the event, and it was a staff appreciation dinner for approximately 80 people. In addition, the event included a welcome speech, a buffet dinner, some entertainment and a small award ceremony.

Furthermore, I was particularly impressed with the services that your hotel provided. The ambience of the hotel was elegant. The staff was very polite, approachable and helpful throughout the event. The dining area was very spacious, clean and well decorated. I was pleased with the delicious food and the variety of vegetarian and non- vegetarian. Furthermore, everyone praised the hotel because they were very impressed with its excellent services and beautiful facilities.

However, I would like to suggest some areas for improvement. Initially, the reception area became crowded when guests arrived, so having more staff at the entrance would make the process smoother. Other than that, the music system could be improved, as the sound was occasionally unclear.

Overall, we were very pleased with the event and the service provided by your hotel. I hope you will consider these suggestions for future events.

Yours faithfully,

Mehakpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The student has successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. The letter clearly provides the necessary details about the company event, stating that it was a staff appreciation dinner for approximately 80 attendees featuring a welcome speech, buffet, entertainment, and an award ceremony. The writer also explicitly mentions what was liked about the hotel, highlighting the elegant ambience, helpful staff, and delicious food options. Furthermore, practical areas for improvement are suggested, specifically regarding congestion in the reception area and the quality of the music system. The tone is appropriately polite and formal throughout, fitting the general training letter format. All bullet points are fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is consistently maintained from the opening paragraph to the closing remarks, fulfilling all requirements for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The response is logically organized with clear progression throughout the paragraphs. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct theme, moving smoothly from the introduction and event details to the positive aspects, areas for improvement, and a polite conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'However' are employed accurately to link ideas and guide the reader. Referencing is clear, and the overall structure makes the letter very easy to follow. The flow of information is natural and supports the communicative purpose without any noticeable disruption or awkward transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and flexible range of vocabulary suitable for a formal business-related letter. Appropriate terms such as 'appreciation', 'ambience', 'approachable', and 'congested' are used effectively. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some minor collocations could be refined, such as 'variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian', which is missing a noun like 'dishes'. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication at all. The register remains consistently formal and polite, matching the expectations for general correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writer demonstrates good control of grammatical structures, successfully blending simple and complex sentences. Examples of complex structures include 'I was responsible for organizing the event, and it was a staff appreciation dinner for approximately 80 people' and 'having more staff at the entrance would make the process smoother.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled well throughout. There are only very minor issues, such as the incomplete noun phrase mentioned in lexical resource, but grammatical control overall is strong, allowing for clear and precise communication without any misunderstanding.
