Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Ma,

I am writing this letter in regard to the booking of your hotel. I booked the hotel (John Hotel) located at Apo district, Abuja on behalf of the company for our 10th year anniversary which we held last week sunday being the 20th of August.

I want to reiterate that I am impressed with your services. My collegues also appreciated my effort in booking such a great venue for the event. Personally, one of most exciting feature is uninterrupted power supply and proffessional staff. The lights and air conditions were constant and also we were recieved warmly by your workers who assisted us throughout the event.

However, while we are thankful there are also areas that needs utmost attention is the buffet offered to us as a perk of using the hall. The food was not so bad but the appetizers was stale and bland but the main meal was nice. Also, the flooring is terrible. I wonder who made the choice of flooring as the color Red was not suitable. I hope it con be considered.

I hope this letter finds you well

Yours f

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points required by the task. For the first bullet point, the student provides details about the event, mentioning the 10th-year anniversary held at the John Hotel in Apo district, Abuja, on August 20th. For the second point, what was particularly liked is clearly stated, highlighting the uninterrupted power supply and the professional, warm staff. For the third point, areas for improvement are suggested, specifically the stale appetizers at the buffet and the unsuitable red flooring. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager, and the purpose of the communication is clearly fulfilled throughout. Therefore, the response successfully addresses all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear logical organisation overall, moving smoothly from the context of the booking to the positive aspects, followed by constructive criticisms, and ending with a closing thought. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the introduction, the praise for the hotel, and the areas for improvement. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, with transition words like 'However' and 'Also' guiding the reader through the text. However, referencing and paragraph transitions are occasionally mechanical, and the letter closes abruptly with an incomplete sign-off ('Yours f'). Despite these minor flaws, the overall progression is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint or feedback letter, incorporating terms such as 'reiterate', 'uninterrupted power supply', 'appetizers', and 'buffet'. There are some lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'collegues' instead of colleagues, 'proffessional' instead of professional, and 'recieved' instead of received. Furthermore, phrases like 'the food was not so bad' lean towards informal, conversational style rather than standard formal business correspondence. Nonetheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without causing significant confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter in regard to the booking of your hotel' and 'while we are thankful there are also areas that needs utmost attention is the buffet offered to us'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips, including subject-verb agreement issues ('areas that needs... is'), run-on phrasing, and missing capitalization on days of the week ('sunday'). Additionally, the letter ends mid-sentence in the sign-off ('Yours f'). Although these errors are noticeable, they do not impede overall communication.
