Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to you for the appreciation of how professionally you have managed & focus on all the details I have shared, like the theme, speakers and the carpets that I told you to make sure that they should be in red colour.

However the whole event was successful and especially I like the decoration that you made on stage and theme you choose for the event was also magnificent, additionally I just want you to improve the sofas in hall way because while we were sitting they just like to be broken inside. Although every arrangement was perfect and beyond my expectations but I was slightly disappointed by your chairs because they were too uncomfortable.

In future you guys will be the one who will engage every event for my company. Also I will recommend to those are personal relations and colleagues to must experience your services.

Thankyou.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points required by the prompt. The letter begins by providing details about the event, mentioning specific elements such as the theme, speakers, and red carpets. It then mentions what was particularly liked about the hotel, noting the stage decoration and magnificent theme. Finally, areas for improvement are clearly suggested, specifically regarding the hallway sofas and uncomfortable chairs. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint or feedback letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. All requirements are met effectively, leading to a solid task response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a clear overall progression. The student uses basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'additionally', and 'Although' to connect ideas, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or run-on, as seen in the long opening sentence. Paragraphing is attempted, but the structure is somewhat fragmented, with a single sentence forming the closing paragraph and minor issues with overall layout. Reference words are generally clear, but grouping related ideas into distinct paragraphs could be improved. Overall, the organization is coherent enough to guide the reader smoothly through the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'professionally', 'magnificent', 'disappointed', and 'recommend'. However, there are notable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'focus on all the details' instead of 'focus on the details', and 'they just like to be broken inside' which is awkward phrasing. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary, the errors in expression occasionally distract the reader, placing this response firmly in the Band 6 category for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at subordination using connectors like 'although' and 'while'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation lapses. For instance, the opening sentence is a massive run-on: 'I am writing this letter to you for the appreciation of how professionally you have managed & focus on all the details...'. Other errors include incorrect verb forms ('theme you choose' instead of 'chose') and informal contractions or colloquialisms ('In future you guys will be the one'). These errors occasionally impede smooth understanding, justifying a Band 5.5 score.
