Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to you regarding a company event that we recently organised at your hotel. The main purpose of this letter is to provide feedback about our experience and suggest some improvements.
To begin with, I would like to mention that our company organised a business conference for approximately 100 employees at your hotel last weekend. This is important because the event included several presentations and group activities. As a result, we required a comfortable and well-organised venue.
Furthermore, I would like to explain that I was particularly impressed by the excellent service provided by your staff. In particular, the conference hall was spacious, clean, and well equipped. I believe this helped us conduct the event successfully and made our guests feel comfortable.
Finally, regarding areas for improvement, the food service was quite slow during the lunch break. I would appreciate it if you could provide additional staff during large events. This would reduce waiting times and improve the overall experience for guests.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my situation. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully satisfies all requirements of the task. The student successfully covers all bullet points by providing specific details about the event (a business conference for approximately 100 employees last weekend), mentioning what was particularly liked about the hotel (the excellent service, spaciousness, cleanliness, and equipment of the conference hall), and suggesting an area for improvement (slower food service during the lunch break and a suggestion to provide additional staff). The tone is appropriately formal for a business letter to a hotel manager, and the purpose is clear from the opening paragraph. The ideas are well-developed and well-extended, fully meeting the criteria for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured coherently, with each paragraph serving a distinct function corresponding to the letter prompts. The writer uses a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally', which guide the reader smoothly through the response. Paragraphing is used appropriately and sufficiently, with distinct paragraphs for the introduction, event details, positive aspects, areas for improvement, and the sign-off. Referencing throughout the text is clear, and the overall progression feels natural and well-managed.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common business-related lexical items such as 'purpose', 'conference', 'approximately', and 'impressed'. Word choice is generally precise and appropriate for a formal letter. There are no notable spelling or word-choice errors, and collocations such as 'business conference', 'group activities', and 'lunch break' are used naturally. While the vocabulary is not overly sophisticated, it is flexible enough to allow for precise communication, comfortably meeting the standards for a solid band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The writer demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures, successfully blending simple and complex sentences. Examples of complex structures include 'I am writing to you regarding a company event that we recently organised at your hotel' and 'I would appreciate it if you could provide additional staff during large events.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. Grammar and mechanics are well-controlled, and there are no persistent errors that impede communication. The control of verb tenses (past simple for past events, present simple for general facts, and conditional structures for polite suggestions) is accurate.
