Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my gratitude to the hotel staff for the services you provided at my company's event last Sunday. We organised a fundraising event for local women-oriented charities at your hotel. I am glad that I opted for your hotel by seeing the reviews online and it met my expectations as well.

I was really impressed with the decoration as well as with the flowers that you used for the function. Other than that, the reception staff was so good and nobody had a problem to accessing the exact location of the event. Moreover, the signs were so accurate that some people did not even need to ask someone. Furthermore, the food was so delicious and everybody praised the quality and freshness.

I just wanted to give suggestion about one thing that I really want you to improve is the wi-fi service. It was good in the main hall, nontheless, it had some issue in the event's venue, as the presentation video was buffered again and agian. You can install a mini router to boost the speed of the internet, so that it can work properly.

However, the overall event was a sucess. And I will recomend your hotel to the kith and kin in the future.

Yours faithfully,

Roopkamal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You provided details about the event, mentioning that it was a fundraising event for local women-oriented charities held last Sunday. You also covered what you particularly liked, highlighting the decorations, flowers, reception staff, and the delicious food. Furthermore, you suggested areas for improvement by pointing out the wi-fi issues during the presentation video and offered a practical solution of installing a mini router. The tone is appropriately polite and formal for a business letter to a hotel manager. All requirements are fully met, reflecting a strong performance on this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, such as event details, positive feedback, suggestions for improvement, and a concluding remark. Cohesive devices like 'Other than that,' 'Moreover,' 'Furthermore,' and 'However' are used to connect ideas, though some transitional phrases feel slightly repetitive or conversational. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different themes, resulting in a coherent and easy-to-follow overall arrangement.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'express my gratitude', 'fundraising event', and 'freshness'. There are attempts at less common vocabulary, but some word choices and phrasing feel slightly unnatural or colloquial, such as 'nobody had a problem to accessing' and referring to friends and family as 'kith and kin', which sounds overly archaic in this context. Spelling is generally accurate, though minor slips like 'sucess' occur. The vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('that you used for the function') and conditional or causal clauses. You demonstrate good control over past and present tenses. However, there are a few grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'problem to accessing' instead of 'problem accessing' and 'again and agian' (spelling slip). Despite these occasional errors, communication is never impeded, and the majority of sentences are clear and grammatically sound.
