Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing to share my experience about the recent event I organised in your hotel and to suggest some improvements in the dining area and the food quality.
I organised a conference event in your hotel on 5 July from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. It was about different biomedical devices and multiple biodegradable coatings and I also invited several leading scientists from medical research centres including the CEO of Bio-Interactions. The conference was held for 4 hours followed by refreshments. Additionally, we attracted multiple projects and significant fundings from different medical companies.
Though, The hotel staff assisted in every possible way but one thing I would like to mention that fascinated me about the hotel is the conference area. There was enough room to accommodate all the guests including comfortable chair and benches. The electric connection was feasible.
I would also like to recommend some areas for improvement in order to attract future events. The dining area was not big enough to give all guest enough space to sit and discuss their ideas with others. I noticed most them were standing. Apart from that, some scientists also left their food in plate raising concerns about the food quality and taste.
I hope the hotel will look into this matter. Thank you for considering my feedback and I look forward to organise more events in your hotel.
Kind regards,
Ashu Berwal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the prompt. Details about the event are clearly provided, including the date, time, topic of the conference, and attendees. What was particularly liked about the hotel is also effectively mentioned, specifically highlighting the conference area, spaciousness, and electrical connections. Furthermore, constructive suggestions for improvement regarding the dining area size and food quality are clearly articulated. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is sustained throughout. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant details, fulfilling all the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Each paragraph addresses a specific aspect of the prompt, ensuring a clear progression of ideas from providing details to expressing likes and finally making suggestions. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Though', and 'Apart from that' are used reasonably well to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical, such as starting a sentence with 'Though, The hotel staff...'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in linking phrases would enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The candidate demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases such as 'biomedical devices', 'biodegradable coatings', and 'accommodate' show a satisfactory command of topic-specific lexical items. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'significant fundings' (funding is uncountable), 'electric connection was feasible' (reliable or adequate would be more natural), and 'leave their food in plate' (leave food on their plates). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I organised a conference event in your hotel on 5 July from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm' and 'The dining area was not big enough to give all guest enough space to sit...'. There are several minor grammatical errors, including 'multiple projects and significant fundings' and missing pluralisation or articles in 'most them were standing' and 'in plate'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are present, the majority of sentences are error-free and do not impede communication.
