Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I intend to write this letter in order to express my gratitude towards the excellent services rendered by your esteemed hotel during a corporate event organised the prior week on behalf of my company.

I would like to particularly commend the professionalism of your banquet staff, who worked tirelessly to ensured that the seating arrangements, catering, and audio-visual equipments were working well ahead of schedule. The product launch was attended by around eighty guests including several senior clients from overseas. The elegance of your conference hall, combined with the warm attentive service from your team, left a lasting impression on our guests and contributed to significant success of the event.

However, I did notice a couple of areas that could be improved for future events. Formost, the Wi-Fi connection in the conference hall was somewhat unrelible, which caused minor inconvenience during live presentation. Beside that, the parking facility outside the hotel seemed inadequate for the number of guests we had, resulting in some of the visitors to park quite away from the venue.

Dispite these minor issues , I would not hesitate to recommend your hotel for future corporate functions, looking forward to working with your team again.

Yours faithfully,

Simar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The candidate has fully and effectively addressed all parts of the task prompt. The letter begins appropriately with the required salutation and clearly covers the three bullet points: it provides sufficient details about the corporate event (attended by eighty guests, product launch, overseas senior clients), highlights what was particularly liked (the professionalism of the banquet staff and the elegance of the conference hall), and suggests specific areas for improvement (the unreliable Wi-Fi connection and inadequate parking facilities). The tone is consistently professional, polite, and well-suited for a formal business letter to a hotel manager. All ideas are extended and supported logically without any irrelevant digressions. The purpose of the letter is crystal clear from the opening paragraph and is sustained throughout the text, meeting all criteria for a strong performance at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical progression from the opening statement of purpose, through the positive feedback and constructive criticisms, to the closing recommendation. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph having a distinct and focused function. Cohesive devices such as 'combining with', 'However', 'Formost' (spelled 'Foremost'), and 'Beside that' are used to guide the reader through the text, although some cohesive links are slightly conversational or mechanical for formal writing. Nevertheless, referencing is clear throughout, and the overall arrangement of ideas ensures that the letter flows smoothly from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suitable for a formal business context. Words and phrases like 'express my gratitude', 'esteemed hotel', 'professionalism', 'lasting impression', and 'corporate functions' show good control of less common lexical items. However, there are a few noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'ensured' instead of 'ensure', 'equipments' (equipment is uncountable), 'Formost' instead of 'Foremost', 'unrelible' instead of 'unreliable', 'Beside that' instead of 'Besides that' or 'Furthermore', and 'Dispite' instead of 'Despite'. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary used is precise enough to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'who worked tirelessly to ensured that...', 'combined with the warm attentive service from your team, left a lasting impression...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, demonstrating a solid control of grammar and punctuation overall. However, a few grammatical and mechanical errors persist, such as the tense/infinitive slip in 'worked tirelessly to ensured' and spelling errors like 'dispite'. Punctuation is generally managed well, though there is a comma splice near the end ('Dispite these minor issues , I would not hesitate...'). These errors do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably in the Band 7 range.
