Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to thank you for helping me organize my company's annual party at your hotel. Additionally, I am providing my feedback in this letter. I hope it will help you to serve other customers as well.

To begin with, I am grateful to you for accepting the last minute booking for this event. As it was an annual party of the company, it was ceratinly a much awaited event for all the employees. However, finalizing the venue has always been a challenge. Fortunately, one of my friends recommended your hotel to host this party.

In addition to this, the hotel has a dedicated and courteous staff, who takes proper care of the guests. It's one of those hotels in the city that can accommodate such strength of people. Total number of employees who turned up for this event was 120. I had never organized such a huge event before and it was because of you that it could become possible.

However, there are certain areas of improvements. Firstly, the timemanagement can be handled in a better manner to avoid delay in orders.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student has successfully covered all parts of the prompt in their letter to the hotel manager. They provided details about the event, mentioning that it was an annual company party with 120 attendees and noting the last-minute booking. They also highlighted what they liked, specifically the dedicated, courteous staff and the hotel's capacity. Additionally, they suggested areas for improvement, pointing out time management issues and order delays. The purpose of the letter is clear, and a polite, appropriate tone is maintained throughout, fitting the semi-formal requirement of a general training task. The response is fully developed and well within the required length, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphs are used purposefully, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing different prompts, and a concluding section. The student makes use of cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'To begin with', 'In addition to this', and 'However' to link ideas smoothly. Although the final paragraph is slightly truncated and ends abruptly after introducing the improvement point, the logical sequence of information remains clear. Referencing is generally appropriate, and the message flows well from one point to the next, which aligns closely with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 descriptors. A score of 6.5 reflects the slightly abrupt ending.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student employs an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases such as 'dedicated and courteous staff', 'last minute booking', and 'much awaited event' show a satisfactory command of everyday and semi-formal register. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though a few minor errors occur, such as the spelling typo 'ceratinly' instead of 'certainly' and the awkward phrasing 'such strength of people' instead of 'such a large number of people'. Despite these minor lexical inaccuracies, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficiently flexible to convey the intended meaning clearly, justifying a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Fortunately, one of my friends recommended your hotel to host this party' and 'I had never organized such a huge event before and it was because of you that it could become possible.' There are several instances of good control over basic grammar and punctuation. However, there are some noticeable grammatical slips, such as 'areas of improvements' (should be 'an area of improvement' or 'areas for improvement') and 'the timemanagement can be handled' (unnecessary article 'the' and spacing error). Because these errors do not impede understanding and there is a reasonable mix of structures, the grammar falls comfortably into the Band 6.0 category.
