Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

My name is Manjeet. I am writing to express my experience of holding an annual company event at your hotel, which was last Saturday.

My entire management team and I enjoyed the event to the fullest, which was only possible because of your excellent hospitality. The quality of the food was really amazing and the seating arrangement inside and outside the hall made it very convenient to accommodate all the attendees.

Although there were a lot of things that I totally admired about the arrangements, the parking area was not sufficient, as many of us had to park our cars roadside and in the plaza just beside the hotel. the senior management team was very upset with me because I was the one who was responsible for organizing this event. I somehow handled the situation, but this could cause a big problem for me. I would like to suggest you allocate more parking lots, as there is a large abandoned area just at the backside of the hotel that can be used for this purpose.

I hope you will consider my suggestion.

Yours faithfully,

Manjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the task prompt. First, clear details about the event are provided, mentioning that it was an annual company event held last Saturday. Second, specific aspects of the hotel are highlighted, such as the excellent hospitality, amazing food quality, and convenient seating arrangements. Finally, a constructive area for improvement is suggested regarding the inadequate parking area, supported by a practical solution to utilise the abandoned backside area. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clearly communicated throughout. The response satisfies all criteria for a Band 7.0 performance in this category.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression from the opening introduction to the closing sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively, with distinct paragraphs dedicated to the introduction, the positive aspects of the hotel, the suggested areas for improvement, and the polite conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'as', and 'I would like to' are used appropriately to connect clauses and ideas, although referencing could occasionally be smoother. Overall, the flow of information is natural and guides the reader easily through the letter, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying precise meaning with phrases like 'annual company event', 'excellent hospitality', and 'senior management team'. There are attempts to use less common items, and words are generally used with an appropriate level of style and collocation for a business communication. Minor spelling or punctuation slips, such as the lowercase 'the' in 'the senior management team', do not impede communication. The lexical range is adequate and consistent with a Band 6.5 rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating control over grammatical forms. Examples of complex structures include 'Although there were a lot of things that I totally admired about the arrangements...' and 'I would like to suggest you allocate more parking lots...'. While there is a minor punctuation error with a lowercase start to a sentence ('the senior management team'), the majority of sentences are error-free and communication is never impeded. The grammatical control is solid and comfortably achieves a Band 7.0.
