Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing to share my experience about the service provided by your hotel. Last Sunday, my company organized a farewell party for one of our collegues in your hotel.

I suggested my team members to book your hotel for this event. Firstly,it was near to the location of our company and one of my friends told me about your hotel facilities. I am very happy with the service and the price also, it was reasonable including breakfast and lunch. Moreover, all the staff members were co-operative and helpful. They decorated the hall in appropriate way with flowers and ballons. Futhermore, the sound system was also good. We enjoyed a lot and captured some beautiful memories with our friends.

However, I was disappointed with the cleaning staff at your hotel. Because the restrooms were dirty and there was no soap and towel. Even though, we informed them to arrange these items, they did not response for atleast 2 hours. I would like to suggest you to consult with your staff and fix the cleaning issue for the future.

I hope you will consider my suggestion.

Yours Faithfully,

Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task instructions. You clearly provide the necessary details about the event, mentioning that it was a farewell party for a colleague held last Sunday. You also highlight what you particularly liked about the hotel, such as the reasonable price including meals, the cooperative staff, and the good sound system. Furthermore, you effectively suggest areas for improvement regarding the cleanliness of the restrooms and the delayed response from the staff. Your tone is appropriately formal for a business-related complaint and request letter. The purpose of the letter is evident throughout, and all parts of the prompt are well-addressed, fulfilling the requirements for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your letter has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. It is divided into appropriate paragraphs, starting with an introduction, moving to the positive aspects, then addressing the negative points, and concluding with a polite sign-off. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'However' to connect your ideas, although some linking words are slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct points. To move to a higher band, ensure smoother transitions between sentences and avoid starting multiple sentences with similar transitional phrases.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'reasonable', 'co-operative', and 'appropriate'. There are, however, some lexical and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'collegues' instead of 'colleagues', 'ballons' instead of 'balloons', and the misspelling of 'Furthermore'. Additionally, some word choices could be more precise, such as saying 'response' instead of 'responded'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively without impeding communication, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses using 'because', 'even though', and relative structures. There are several grammatical errors present, such as 'service provided by your hotel' where an article or preposition choice could be smoother, 'near to the location' (unnecessary 'to'), and 'they did not response for atleast 2 hours' (should be 'respond' and 'at least'). Punctuation has occasional flaws, such as a missing space after a comma ('Firstly,it'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and your meaning remains clear throughout the letter, which corresponds to a solid Band 6.0 performance.
