IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently helped your company organise an event at a hotel. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:

– Provide details about the event
– Mention what you particularly liked about the hotel
– Suggest areas for improvement.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madan,

I hope you are doing well,

I am writing to share feedback about our last event at your Hotel.

First, to refresh your memory, we coordinated an event on 21 September, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, in the Sunshine Room at your hotel.

The event had a positive impact on our clients; they really enjoyed it and participated actively. We received positive feedback about the food and drinks; the parking option was accessible for our clients who were concerned about it; and, of course, your hotel's location was very convenient for them. Moreover, the view in the sunshine room delighted our clients, and they could see the sunset there. Many thanks for that.

However, we presented a few technology issues, for example: slow internet, which made it difficult for our team to present; also, we took around 30 minutes to coordinate the sound, which was off. Despite these issues, we had a good experience at your hotel.

In my opinion, it is important to let you know about these small issues to improve your services for other clients or stakeholders.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Respectfully,

Lorena Lopez

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. First, clear details about the event are provided, including the date, time, and specific location ("on 21 September, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, in the Sunshine Room"). Second, the response highlights what was particularly liked about the hotel, noting the positive impact on clients, the accessible parking, the convenient location, and the sunset view from the room. Finally, areas for improvement are clearly suggested, specifically addressing technology issues such as slow internet and sound coordination problems. The tone is appropriately polite and professional for a formal complaint/feedback letter. All parts of the prompt are fully and effectively addressed, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically sequenced and easy to follow. Ideas are organized into clear paragraphs, starting with an opening greeting and statement of purpose, moving into event details and positive aspects, and then transitioning smoothly into areas for improvement using a cohesive transition ("However, we presented a few technology issues"). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thoughts, and referencing devices like "them" and "these issues" function well to maintain continuity. Although cohesion is straightforward rather than particularly sophisticated, it is well managed throughout the text, ensuring a clear logical progression from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate and precise enough to convey the intended message clearly. The writer uses some good functional phrases such as "refresh your memory," "positive impact," and "convenient for them." There is an attempt to use less common items like "stakeholders" and "coordinate." However, there is a minor lexical slip in the salutation ("Dear Sir or Madan") and a slight collocation or word-choice awkwardness in the sentence "we presented a few technology issues" (where "experienced" or "encountered" would be more natural). Overall, the range is sufficient for the task and communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses (e.g., "clients who were concerned about it") and compound structures successfully. Control of punctuation and grammar is generally good, and the majority of sentences are grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as the typographical error in the greeting ("Madan" instead of "Madam") and the awkward phrasing regarding technology issues, but these do not impede communication. The grammatical range is appropriate for achieving a clear and polite professional correspondence.
