IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently helped your company organise an event at a hotel. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:

– Provide details about the event
– Mention what you particularly liked about the hotel
– Suggest areas for improvement.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Hotel Manager,

I am writing to thank you and your team for the excellent service provided during the corporate event my company held at your hotel last Saturday.

The event was a one-day professional conference attended by approximately 80 employees and business partners. It included a series of presentations, a networking session and a formal dinner. Overall, everything ran smoothly, and the staff were exceptionally attentive and well organised.

What impressed me most was the hotel’s elegant conference facilities. The meeting room was spacious, well-equipped and pleasantly air-conditioned, while the catering was of a remarkably high standard. I also appreciated how promptly the staff responded to our requests throughout the day.

Nevertheless, there are a couple of areas that could be improved. The registration desk became rather crowded before the event, causing some delays. In addition, the Wi-Fi connection was occasionally unstable during the presentations. I would therefore suggest increasing the number of registration staff and upgrading the internet service.

Thank you once again for helping make our event a success.

Yours faithfully,

Fatima

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The candidate has successfully fulfilled all the bullet points outlined in the task prompt in a clear and natural manner. The letter begins by providing specific details about the corporate event, including the number of attendees (approximately 80 employees and business partners) and its purpose. It then clearly identifies what was particularly liked about the hotel, highlighting the elegant conference facilities, well-equipped meeting room, and remarkable catering standards. Finally, the response offers practical suggestions for improvement, specifically addressing the crowded registration desk and unstable Wi-Fi connection. The tone is entirely appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. All parts of the prompt are well-developed and fully addressed, achieving a high standard that fits the Band 8 profile.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the opening statement of gratitude to details of the event, positive aspects, areas for improvement, and finally a polite closing sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'while the catering was', 'I also appreciated', and 'I would therefore suggest' are used naturally and effectively to link ideas without being obtrusive. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a single thematic area, creating a cohesive and easy-to-read text that fully satisfies the Band 8 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The student employs a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suited to a formal business context. Phrases such as 'professional conference', 'exceptionally attentive', 'remarkably high standard', and 'upgrading the internet service' demonstrate a strong command of less common lexical items with appropriate collocations. Word choice is precise throughout the response, and there are no spelling or word-choice errors. The vocabulary allows the writer to convey precise meanings smoothly and effectively, fitting comfortably within the Band 8 descriptor criteria for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response features a wide range of grammatical structures used with a high degree of accuracy. The writer successfully combines complex sentences containing subordinate clauses ('attended by approximately 80 employees', 'while the catering was of a remarkably high standard') with flawless simple sentences. Punctuation and verb tense consistency are handled expertly throughout the letter. The vast majority of sentences are entirely error-free, with only very occasional minor slips, fully justifying a Band 8 score for grammatical range and accuracy.
