Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing in regard to the event that my company has organised at your hotel.

The event was for the farewell of our senior manager. It was held on 23rd August 2026. It was organised for 100 people. The very first thing i liked about your hotel was that it has got very spacious event hall. All the staff were perfectly fitted in the hall. The decoration was outstanding. The food was amazing. Eveyone enjoyed their food.

However, there are few points that i wanted to bring your attention towards. I felt that service was slow and we encounter some problem in the music system. apart from these, air condition was not working propely. It was very hot inside the event hall and staff were very unhappy. Rest all the things were well organized.

I hope you would consider my suggestion carefully and improve in the future.

Kind regards,

Kajol Belbase

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. The letter clearly provides the necessary details about the corporate event, including the purpose (farewell of a senior manager), the date (23rd August 2026), and the number of attendees (100 people). Furthermore, the response successfully mentions what was particularly liked about the hotel, highlighting the spacious event hall, outstanding decoration, and amazing food. Areas for improvement are also clearly suggested, specifically noting slow service, a malfunctioning music system, and issues with the air conditioning. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. Ideas are sufficiently extended to meet the requirements of General Training Task 1, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is generally coherent and follows a logical overall arrangement. It opens with an appropriate salutation and a clear statement of purpose. Paragraphing is used to separate different aspects of the letter, such as the event details, positive aspects, and areas for improvement. However, cohesion is sometimes slightly mechanical, with basic transitions like 'However' and 'apart from these'. Referencing is generally clear, though minor punctuation and capitalisation errors (such as 'i' instead of 'I') slightly detract from the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow and meets the descriptors for a band 6.5 or 7.0, leaning towards a clear organisational structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. The candidate attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'farewell', 'spacious', and 'outstanding'. However, there are some noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'staff were perfectly fitted in the hall' (rather than 'accommodated') and spelling slips like 'Eveyone' instead of 'Everyone'. While these minor issues do not impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to the band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The very first thing i liked about your hotel was that it has got very spacious event hall.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, including missing articles ('it has got very spacious event hall', 'service was slow', 'air condition was not working propely'), incorrect verb tenses ('we encounter' instead of 'encountered'), and lowercase 'i'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and communication is rarely impeded. This fits the profile for Band 6.
