Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my gratitude towards your excellent service provided by your hotel. We recently had an anual training session organized at your Villa Santa hotel.

Our staff and management was very satisfied and delighted with your amazing arrangements for our event. The learing module session was about gaining valuable practical experience on how to provide CPR on a dummy patients.

I am so happy to share that you had done your best to provide high level of customer service. Among everything, I would say, arranging a dummy clients for us was a difficult task and your event managers managed it so professionally.

Unfortunately, our staff was not so satisfied with the food. Most of our employees are vegetarian and they were unable to eat anything despite of having juice. I am formally requesting you to make some amendements in your menu and add few vegan and veggie options so everyone could enjoy a meal.

I hope my message would be meaningful to you.

Yours faithfully,

Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly provided details about the event, mentioning that it was an annual training session held at the Villa Santa hotel focusing on CPR training with dummy patients. You also mentioned what you particularly liked, specifically praising the professionalism of the event managers in arranging the dummy clients. Furthermore, you suggested areas for improvement by addressing the lack of vegetarian options and requesting menu amendments. The tone of the letter is appropriate for a formal complaint and compliment combined, maintaining a polite yet firm register throughout. The purpose of the letter is evident from the opening sentence and is sustained until the sign-off.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle paragraphs addressing specific prompts, and a polite concluding sentence before the sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the feedback, such as the positive remarks and the complaint regarding the food. Cohesive devices are generally handled well, using transition words like 'Unfortunately' to shift the tone from praise to constructive criticism. However, referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive in sentence openings, such as the frequent use of personal pronouns. Overall progression is clear throughout the text, and the reader can easily follow the sequence of ideas from appreciation to suggestions for improvement.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate and generally appropriate for the context of a formal business feedback letter. You successfully use functional phrases such as 'express my gratitude', 'customer service', and 'formally requesting'. However, there are a few spelling and word-choice inaccuracies, such as 'anual' instead of 'annual', 'learing' instead of 'learning', 'dummy patients' instead of 'dummy patient', and 'amendements' instead of 'amendments'. Additionally, the phrase 'despite of having juice' is slightly unnatural; 'despite having only juice' would be more precise. These lexical lapses prevent the piece from reaching a higher band, but communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Our staff and management was very satisfied...' and 'Among everything, I would say, arranging a dummy clients for us was a difficult task...'. There are a few grammatical inaccuracies and subject-verb agreement errors present, notably 'Our staff and management was' (should be 'were' when referring to staff members in this context), 'a dummy clients' (article/noun number mismatch), and the unnecessary preposition in 'despite of having juice'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors persist, they do not impede communication. The sentence structures are sufficiently varied to meet the requirements of a competent user.
