Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to appreciate for the services that you gave us on our company event that was held on last week in your hotel.
I was glad that we organize our company annual event in your hotel. It was 3 day event started on 02 September to 5 September. There were about 250 people who attend this event and i am glad to inform you that everyone was so happy with the arrangements that you have been made.
Everyone was amazed with the decoration and the cleanness in the event. It was a big event and everyone was shocked that your staff maintain the hygiene as well as the decoration throughout the event. The food was fantastic and warmed throughout the day.
Despite all the things, I want to to mentioned about the cooling system of the hall. Some of our guest complaint that they feel hot inside the hall. It might due the huge gathering. We requested the ground staff to turn on the fans, they helped us alot . I believe that particular area needs your attention.
Feel free to reach me out for further questions.
Sincerely,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You successfully provided details about the event, such as the dates and the number of attendees, mentioned what you particularly liked, including the decoration, cleanliness, and food, and suggested an area for improvement regarding the cooling system in the hall. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter to a hotel manager. All parts of the prompt are addressed adequately, making the communication clear and purposeful. Ideas are relevant and developed well enough to satisfy the requirements of a General Training Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a clear logical organization with appropriate paragraphing. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter and event details to positive feedback, constructive criticism, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as time markers ('started on 02 September to 5 September') and transition words ('Despite all the things') are used, although referencing and linking could occasionally be smoother. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the letter effectively, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the progression of your ideas from appreciation to suggestions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items such as 'hygiene', 'gathering', and 'arrangements'. However, there are several word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'appreciate for the services' instead of 'thank you for the services', 'warmed' instead of 'warm' for food, and 'turn on the fans' which is slightly informal. While these lexical errors do not impede communication, they prevent the piece from achieving a higher band. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'that you gave us on our company event that was held on last week', 'arrangements that you have been made', 'It might due the huge gathering', and 'reach me out'. Additionally, verb tense consistency needs attention ('organize' instead of 'organized'). Despite these frequent errors, the meaning remains clear and they do not heavily impede communication. A wider range of error-free complex sentences would be required to reach a higher band.
