Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you regarding the blood donation event held at JW marriotte at Andheri on 15 th september.

I am very greatful to be a part of such social event. The event started at 8 am in the morning, the different sections were allotted for knowing blood groups which made the process smooth. The refreshments were served and certificates were provided to the people who whole heartedly participated. In addition, there was a section to note down the details about the individuals with rare blood groups for future.

The best part was the arrangements done by the staff members, they were patiently guiding the individuals and helped them settle down post blood donation. The ground staff, especially karan who really helped in arranging the tables and making sure refreshments were sufficient. However, the toileteries were not kept in the washroom and even the floor was slipery which made it difficult for some people. I hope hotel manager look into this and do needful.

I would say overall the experience was really good, please let me know if you need any further details about the event. I have attached the photos which were taken on the event day.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required in the prompt successfully. You provide clear details about the event, such as the date (15th September), location (JW Marriott at Andheri), start time, and specific arrangements like blood group testing and refreshments. You also mention what you particularly liked about the hotel, highlighting the helpful staff and specifically naming Karan for his excellent ground support. Furthermore, you suggest areas for improvement by pointing out the missing toiletries and the slippery washroom floor. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. Ideas are relevant and fully developed, satisfying all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It opens with an appropriate salutation and statement of purpose, moves into event details and positive aspects, addresses improvements, and concludes with a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, event features, staff appreciation and complaints, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, though referencing is occasionally slightly loose, as seen in phrases like 'doing needful' and minor awkward transitions. Overall, the message flows well and is easy to follow from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'refreshments', 'whole heartedly participated', and 'arrangements'. There are, however, some spelling errors and word-choice slips, such as 'marriotte' (Marriott), 'greatful' (grateful), 'toileteries' (toiletries), and 'slipery' (slippery). Additionally, the phrase 'do needful' is unnatural in standard British or American business correspondence. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate to communicate your meaning clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. You successfully employ relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'people who whole heartedly participated' and 'staff members, they were patiently guiding...'. However, there are some grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as missing articles ('I hope hotel manager'), tense confusion ('inform you regarding... held'), and run-on structures (comma splices in the second paragraph). While these errors persist, they rarely impede overall communication, placing your grammar securely in the band 6 range.
