– Suggest areas for improvement. You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding service my guests and I received during our annual gala event at your hotel on 13th June. The excellent food, welcoming atmosphere, and professional service made the evening truly memorable.
The event was held in your banquet hall at 7:00 p.m., and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the special dinner prepared by your chef. In particular, the masala mushroom served with creamy curry was a huge success and quickly became the preferred dish among my guests. The hot chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream was also a perfect dessert and provided a wonderful ending to an excellent meal.
In addition to the delicious food, the ambience of the venue was exceptional. The elegant décor and pleasant background music created a warm and enjoyable atmosphere throughout the evening. I would also like to commend your staff for their professionalism and friendliness. They were attentive at all times and ensured that every guest felt comfortable and well looked after.
Although our experience was excellent overall, I would like to make one small suggestion. The banquet hall was slightly warmer than expected, which caused some discomfort for a few guests. It would be even better if the air-conditioning could be adjusted to a more comfortable temperature during future events.
Thank you once again for making our celebration such a success. I look forward to hosting many more company events at your hotel in the future.
Yours faithfully,
Jignesh Kanani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The candidate has fully satisfied all the requirements of the prompt. All three bullet points are thoroughly addressed and developed. The details of the event are clearly stated in the opening and second paragraph, including the date, time, and specific food items like the masala mushroom and hot chocolate brownie. The positive aspects of the hotel, such as the elegant decor, pleasant background music, and professional, friendly staff, are well highlighted. Furthermore, a constructive area for improvement is successfully provided regarding the banquet hall's temperature and the air-conditioning adjustment. The tone is entirely appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager, and the purpose is sustained throughout. Therefore, this response meets all criteria for a high band score under Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter demonstrates a clear and logical organisation from beginning to end. Information is well-sequenced, moving naturally from the purpose of the letter and event details to specific compliments, followed by a polite suggestion for improvement, and concluding with a warm sign-off. Paragraphing is used skilfully and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct theme (e.g., food, ambience, and staff, followed by the suggestion). Cohesive devices are managed naturally without being obtrusive or mechanical. Pronoun referencing and substitution (such as 'The event', 'In particular', 'In addition to', and 'Although') are handled accurately, ensuring the reader follows the progression of ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The candidate displays a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suited to a formal business context. Phrases such as 'sincere appreciation', 'outstanding service', 'memorable', 'exceptional ambience', and 'commend your staff for their professionalism' demonstrate a strong lexical resource. Less common lexical items are used naturally and with a good awareness of collocation (e.g., 'welcoming atmosphere', 'professional service', 'preferred dish'). There are no noticeable spelling errors or inappropriate word choices, allowing the message to be communicated with precision and ease.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The writing features a wide range of grammatical structures, successfully balancing complex sentences with clear, accurate simple forms. Examples of complex structures include subordinate clauses introduced by 'while', 'although', and 'which' (e.g., 'Although our experience was excellent overall, I would like to make one small suggestion' and 'The banquet hall was slightly warmer than expected, which caused some discomfort'). The majority of sentences are completely error-free, with excellent punctuation and consistent control over verb tenses. Any minor slips are non-systematic and do not impede communication in the slightest.
