Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to show gratitude for the letting us organize an memorable employee award ceremony last month at your hotel.

To begin with, the event was successful as we had the organised couple of games, award function and dinner as well. In the program the venue, which was selected by your staff was the highlight as everyone enjoyed their leisure time there.

I must admit that the service provided by the staff and the cleanliness of the place was exceptional. Most of the employees who attended had complimented abot those two things specifically. It was our perfect decision to choose your hotel for our event.

I would just like to mention few things were the customer experience could be better, which us the decoration of the hall and organization of the sitting arrangement. As few of our people had difficulties due to lack of chairs.

I was great organization from your hotel. Thank you for having us.

Best regards,

Swapnil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You successfully covered all parts of the bullet points required in the task instructions. You provided adequate details about the company's employee award ceremony held last month, highlighted the venue, staff service, and cleanliness as aspects you particularly liked, and constructively suggested areas for improvement such as hall decoration and seating arrangements. The tone of the letter is appropriate throughout. However, some ideas could have been extended slightly further to fully develop the response. Overall, your letter clearly addresses the task requirements and follows the conventional structure of a semi-formal/formal request letter, meeting the criteria well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. You introduced the purpose of the letter in the opening paragraph, discussed positive aspects in the middle, and outlined areas for improvement before concluding politely. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, as seen in how you transitioned from the positive feedback to the suggestions. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, although some referencing and transitions feel a bit mechanical or basic, such as 'To begin with' and 'I would just like to mention'. Despite minor cohesion flaws, the message flows well and is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'employee award ceremony', 'exceptional', and 'customer experience'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher band, such as 'show gratitude for the letting us' instead of 'letting us', 'complimented abot' instead of 'about', and 'sitting arrangement' instead of 'seating arrangement'. Spelling and lexical slips do not impede communication, but they highlight a lack of precision. Expanding your repertoire of collocations and checking prepositions will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You displayed a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter. While you managed some complex structures successfully, such as 'Most of the employees who attended had complimented...', there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present. Examples include 'to show gratitude for the letting us', 'we had the organised couple of games', and 'few things were the customer experience could be better, which us the decoration'. Punctuation is generally fine, but structural errors occasionally cause slight hesitation for the reader. Focusing on accurate article usage and tense consistency will enhance your grammatical accuracy.
