Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
The purpose of my writing today is to thank you for the recent event hosted in your hotel was well organized.
The event was a staff training and team-building event for about 50 employees last week. It was held in a conference room from 9 am to 5 pm. All the staff members were happy with all the arrangements, and the event went smoothly throughout the day.
Moreover, I personally liked the conference room because it was spacious, clean, and well-equipped. The chairs and table were well organized, and the projector and sound system were great. I was quite impressed with the friendly staff; they were helpful with everything.
However, I would like to give some suggestions about the problems we faced during the visit. Firstly, the wifi was a bit slow in the morning, which gave employees tough time to access online materials. Additionally, the parking spaces were so limited for all the guests. I would recommend improving the internet speed and addressing the parking problem for future events.
I am looking forward to seeing how my suggestions translate into prompt actions from your side. Your kind cooperation would be truly appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
Kevin Gohil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers all parts of the task fully and effectively. You successfully provided details about the event, mentioning that it was a staff training and team-building session for 50 employees held in a conference room from 9 am to 5 pm last week. You also clearly highlighted what you liked about the hotel, such as the spacious and clean conference room, great equipment, and the friendly, helpful staff. Furthermore, you suggested relevant areas for improvement by pointing out the slow morning internet speed and limited parking spaces. All bullet points from the prompt are thoroughly addressed with relevant ideas and appropriate tone for a formal letter to a manager. Therefore, this performance meets the criteria for a strong band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear and logical progression of ideas throughout. The structure is well-organized with an appropriate opening greeting, a clear introductory statement of purpose, body paragraphs dedicated to specific points (event details, positive aspects, and suggestions), and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Additionally' are used effectively to guide the reader between paragraphs and sentences, although paragraphing could be even more tightly managed in places. The referencing of ideas and entities (such as referring back to 'the event' and 'the conference room') remains clear and consistent, ensuring seamless overall readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary with adequate flexibility and precision to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'team-building event', 'well-equipped', and 'prompt actions' show an appropriate style for a business correspondence context. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as saying 'The purpose of my writing today is to thank you for the recent event hosted in your hotel was well organized', where the grammar and lexical colligation are slightly awkward. You attempt some less common items like 'transparent' or 'cooperation', but overall the vocabulary remains fairly standard for this type of task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating reasonable control over grammar and punctuation. Sentences like 'All the staff members were happy with all the arrangements, and the event went smoothly throughout the day' are accurate and fluid. However, there is a noticeable grammatical error in the opening sentence: 'thank you for the recent event hosted in your hotel was well organized', which contains a double-verb structure error. Additionally, minor slips occur, such as 'gave employees tough time' (missing the article 'a'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences are clear and correct.
