Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir

I hope you are doing well. This letter is for showing appreciation. I am a Human resources manager at Whole foods and last month we organised an event in your hotel.

It was our company golden anniversary and we invited all our share holders to celebrate. The event was a big success and everyone was satisfied with your arrangements.

Although event lasts for three hours, food arrangements was top notch everything was warm and fresh.

The arrangements of sound system was perfectly aligned with the hall dimemsion, the people sat at the end can hear everything properly.

However, there are couple of things I would like to mention, it could be beneficial for your future events.

Firstly the ventilation system was not strong enough for that big event. The hall was crowded and humid also it could be better if there were more signs outside of the hall to guide guests.

Overall, we are thankful for you and your team to made our event a success.

Hopefully we will do more business together in future.

Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You provided details about the event, mentioning that it was the company's golden anniversary for shareholders and that it took place last month. You also highlighted what you liked about the hotel, specifically praising the food arrangements and the sound system. Furthermore, you suggested areas for improvement, noting the weak ventilation and the need for better external signage. The tone of the letter is polite, appropriate for a business correspondence, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. Although the opening is slightly abrupt and lacks a comma after 'Dear Sir', the task is fully and effectively addressed. Your ideas are relevant and well-developed, earning a solid Band 7.0 for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is generally clear and easy to follow, with a logical overall progression from the purpose of the letter to the positive aspects, areas for improvement, and a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as moving from the event details and praises into the constructive criticism. However, cohesive devices are somewhat basic and mechanical ('Although', 'Firstly', 'Overall'). Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as 'It was our company golden anniversary' where punctuation or linking could be smoother. There is also a lack of paragraphing structure for some of the single-sentence paragraphs, which interrupts the flow slightly. Overall, the organisation is clear enough to meet the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this general task, using appropriate terms such as 'appreciation', 'share holders', 'arrangements', and 'ventilation system'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and lexical errors. For example, 'This letter is for showing appreciation' is slightly unnatural, and 'dimemsion' contains a spelling typo. Phrases like 'do more business together' are acceptable in informal contexts, but could be elevated. You attempt some less common vocabulary, but word-form errors like 'made our event a success' (instead of 'making') show some limitations. Because your vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey your message despite these errors, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses ('Although event lasts for three hours, food arrangements was top notch...'). However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text. These include subject-verb agreement errors ('food arrangements was', 'the people sat at the end can hear'), missing articles ('for that big event', 'outside of the hall'), and a missing comma after the salutation ('Dear Sir'). Tense consistency is also occasionally flawed ('event lasts' instead of 'event lasted'). While these errors do not impede communication and the meaning remains clear, their frequency prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
