Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing to provide a feedback about the recent occasion of a company get together at your facility.
This was a very important event as it is annual day party where all of the company members had a chance to meet eachother and establish healthy relations. The existing mayor of the city had also addressed the crowd. Additionally, the purpose of the gathering was to appreciate team members of the company and give awards to the hardworking employees.
There are many things about your hotel is commendable. Out of all, I really liked your royal theme of the event. The theme brought us back to the king era as it is decorated as a palace. Apart from this, dining furnitures were also made as it is used many centuries back.
However, there were some disappointments too. The frequent disruption of sound system had been observed by the attendees. Even the anchor complained about this to the staff, it had not fixed throughout the function. Besides, food quality was not satisfying. So, please ensure food quality, better hospitality and flawless perfomace of equipments in the future.
Looking forward to your response. I hope you would consider my suggetions.
Yours sincerely,
Steve

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, the writer provides details about the event, mentioning the annual day party, the mayor's speech, and the employee awards ceremony. Second, the hotel features that were particularly liked are clearly highlighted, specifically the royal theme and historical styling of the dining furniture. Third, areas for improvement are suggested, pointing out the sound system disruptions, the unresponsive staff, and the unsatisfactory food quality. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a manager, and the purpose is maintained clearly throughout. Ideas are sufficiently developed and supported to meet the requirements for a Band 7 performance under this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression. Each paragraph corresponds to a specific part of the prompt, ensuring the structure is easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, event details, hotel compliments, areas for improvement, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Apart from this', and 'However' are employed effectively to guide the reader through the text. Although referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive, cohesion is managed well overall, warranting a solid Band 7 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate ideas clearly and with some precision. Phrases such as 'annual day party', 'establish healthy relations', and 'royal theme' demonstrate an adequate lexical resource. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'provide a feedback' (uncountable noun), 'king era' (instead of 'era of kings' or 'regal era'), and 'dining furnitures' (uncountable noun). Despite these minor flaws, the vocabulary is more than adequate for the task and does not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and conditional-style requests. There are several grammatical errors present, such as 'There are many things about your hotel is commendable' (subject-verb agreement), 'it had not fixed' (missing passive voice), and 'suggetions' (spelling slip). Additionally, some punctuation and preposition choices could be refined, such as 'perfomace of equipments'. While these errors do not impede understanding, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. Control of grammar is generally satisfactory for a Band 6.
