Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/ Madam
I am writing to express my appreciation for the services provided during our recent corporate event at your hotel, while also sharing some feedback regarding our event.
On march 15th , our company hosted its annual conference in your grand hall. the event was attended by approximately 150 of our corporate delegates and ran from 9;00 am until 5;00pm
Our team was particularly impressed with the exceptional quality of the catering and the helpfulness of your banquet staff. the lunch buffet offered excellent variety of dishes that accommodated all dietary restriction, and the floor staff were incredibly attentive, ensuring that refreshment were continuously replenished throughout the day .
However there are few areas where we feel your services could be improve firstly, several delegate experienced difficulties in connecting to the venue wi-fi which disrupted our interactive presentation.
Additionally, the sound system in the back half of hall room was muffled which make difficult for people to hear the keynote. I would highly recommend to upgrade wi-fi.
Overall ,it was successful event. I hope this feedback is constructive for your future operations.
Your faithfully,
JON

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task prompt effectively. You successfully provided details about the corporate event held on March 15th with 150 delegates in the grand hall. Furthermore, you clearly mentioned what you particularly liked, highlighting the exceptional quality of the catering and the helpfulness of the banquet staff. Finally, you suggested areas for improvement by addressing the wi-fi connectivity issues and the muffled sound system in the back of the hall. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and all bullet points are well-developed and addressed logically, satisfying all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a clear and logical progression throughout, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter to event details, positive aspects, areas for improvement, and a polite conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the event details, praises, and criticisms. Cohesive devices are generally well handled, though there are minor mechanical errors with punctuation and transition phrases, such as starting sentences without proper capitalization or missing commas (e.g., 'However there are few areas', 'Overall ,it was successful event'). Nonetheless, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'appreciation', 'corporate delegates', 'exceptional quality', and 'constructive'. There are some successful less common items and good collocations like 'dietary restriction' and 'keynote'. However, there are a few word choice and form inaccuracies, such as 'could be improve' instead of 'improved', and missing pluralization or articles in places, like 'offered excellent variety' and 'refreshment were'. Despite these minor errors, your lexical range is adequate to convey your message clearly and appropriately for a formal complaint and appreciation letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as participial phrases ('ensuring that refreshment were continuously replenished'). However, there are notable grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including capitalization oversights at the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'the event was attended', 'the lunch buffet', 'However there'), typographical errors with time formats ('9;00 am'), missing verbs or prepositions ('make difficult for people'), and subject-verb agreement slips ('refreshment were'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the grammar score from reaching a higher band level.
